My reaction to Kill la Kill – first episode

"See this big, empty space? This is where my skepticism used to be before it got blown away."

“See this big, empty space? This is where my skepticism used to be before it got blown away, and got replaced with the thought “why did I even doubted Trigger?”.”

Well, I’m glad that at least one of us is satisfied. I’ll give this show two more episodes or so, if I’ll still spend most of the time yawning and groaning at the art that balances between “kinda stylish” and “let’s draw scribbles reminiscent of TTGL”, I just won’t bother with it. I do like the protagonist (the only thing I liked so far), but the voice of her annoying squaky classmate is as grating for the ears as porn with quadriple amputees is for the eyes. The story so far seems to be trying too hard to be wacky and epic, even if it’s just a set up for the things to come, so I guess I’ll have to wait for it to take a certain direction (something tells me I’m getting too old for certain craziness). I only hope that the battles won’t be in every episode – that was one of the problems with Star Driver, where, despite the show being really good, the protagonist easily overpowered everyone and therefore, the battles were just boring. I can see that in case of Kill la Kill, where the heroine will most likely beat up everyone except Satsuki. All in all, I’m not sure what to think of it yet, but it does give me a lot of reasons to complain for now.

Either that, or my mental age isn’t on the same level as my actual age, and this post is just about how my inner child had a blast. 🙂 Jokes aside, this episode was a good example of what I was talking about in the previous KlK-related post when I said that TTGL, and most of Gainax’s original shows did this kind of over the top right. It’s sure as heck that this show’s sense of over the top is something that either you’ll love or hate, but like these two shows, I think KlK too has that energy and mentality that makes this kind of cartoony, hammy attitude work so well, even more so considering how it’s jam-packed with minute details and cinematography that not only strenghten the show’s attitude (even when it comes to the red signs), but also gives the characters personality. It also helps a lot that the show seems to know how serious it can be before it turns too serious and edgy for its own good (“you say you don’t have enough power, and want to angst about it in the rain? -> it’s in the basement, why haven’t you asked?”), which is a hell of a lot better than what SnK did after the first two episodes, or for an example from a different genre, what Danganronpa’s last episode did when it took the concept of “despair” and “hope”, and went so far with it it became ridicilous for the wrong reasons.

I can sort of agree about Mako though when she started singing, but aside of that, I’m fine with her so far mostly because her innocent attitude makes a fine contrast of the crudeness the school, and ultimately the town represents, but she’s still in line with the weirdness of it. That said, I like most of the characters based on this episode alone, and I was actually pleasently surprised with Ryuko’s character considering I sort expected the usual “so badass she traded her emotions for thoughness” attitude from her (like a certain asian girl in that Eotenes show), and instead she turned out to be a likeable female MC who has the attitude of a fighter, but still a good-natured kid at heart (and like Mikami, can be actually surprised by the events around her). Actually, I’m surprised you didn’t mentioned her battle uniform, it’s a rather common complaint even from those who like the show (I’m not one of them, I’m fine with it so far). 😀

I haven’t seen Star Driver but I still share your concern, this is actually one of the things I was thinking about when I mentioned it in the post how I have a bad feeling that the show will run out of ideas before it finishes. It’s hard to tell yet if all the battles will be like this or they will become increasingly harder for Ryuko, but if the former will be the case, then it’s clear that Trigger’s creativity in making these battles as varied as possible will make or brake the show, just like the Road Runner series’s strength is not the concept of Coyote messing things up all the time, but the variety of ways he’s doing this. And Trigger has the means of archieving this via their brand of over the top and direction, which -in my opinion- is already more than say Hokuto no Ken’s repetitive mook fights can go for.

UUURGHHHHH… I feel literal pain at the mere recall of DR’s last episode, even the game wasn’t too good during this part (Spike clearly didn’t have any ideas), but anime version was beyond cringeworthy. I’ve actually thought a lot about KlK during yesterday’s evening, and ended up sticking to this show in the end. It trully seems to be WAY ahead of what the anime are showing nowadays, so I guess I’ll just need to get used to its wackiness. To be fair, I wasn’t too fond of TTGL and FLCL as well, but this show actually does have a chance, with a pretty good protagonist. Makes me wonder if KlK would still hold up to me in the end if moe era never happened… *laughs*

Heh, how could I forget about this awesomeness? 😀 Truth be told, I absolutely love this uniform. Not because it’s hot or anything, but because it’s so hilariously Japanese, that I just can’t stop laughing at it in a good way. If the protagonist would’ve been a squeaky blob going like” Kyaaaa!! Everyone can see my breasts, Onii-chan, don’t look!” I would hate it. But because it contradicts with her serious nature so much and it would fit well in G Gundam, I really enjoy it. When she was hiding under a cloak though, I had a feeling that Trigger is actually referencing Black Rock Shooter, just with better result than the actual BRS. Strange thing is, I can’t stop thinking of Kojima when I see this character design, it honestly looks like somethjing Hideo would come up with 😀 So yeah, I guess I’m slowly joining you on the hype train. *laughs*

Yeah – HnK really became monotonous after first couple of episodes. While the first ones had those hilarious moments like kenshiro sawing the mook’s head, the later turned into a marathon of bland fights and manly tears. Then again, I’ve seen all Student Council members wearing those level 3 uniforms, so they’ll either come up with some good strategies, or we’ll have to wait for the final fight.
